Content Credentials and C2PA
The main standard here is C2PA, the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, and the label most people see is Content Credentials. The idea is a tamper-evident record attached to a file: who created or edited it, when, and with what tools, including whether AI was involved. Adobe, camera makers, and several platforms have adopted it. When it works, a viewer can click and see the history of an image instead of guessing.
Content Credentials are useful, but they are a labeling layer on the honest side of the pipeline. They tell you an image is genuine when the maker cooperated. They do not, on their own, catch the bad actor who strips the data or generates a fake with no credentials at all. Provenance and detection work together, not instead of each other.
